The plate falling onto the floor. The prettiest plate she ever did own. She couldn’t break its fall onto the metal plate that the couch sits on. Why does the couch sit on a metal plate? Because they had a fireplace there once. But then they relocated the fireplace because the room couldn’t handle the heat. They felt like they were in a sauna when they sat by the fire. Even though a wood fire should feel relaxing, romantic. Instead it made the wife and the children cry, “I’m too hot!!! I’M TOO HOT!!”
Now the fire place is gone. But also the beautiful plate, which was mint green and reminded her of Laura Secord chocolates she ate as a child. The last leaf also fell off the Fiddle Leaf Fig. Another thing gone. It had been threatening a departure for a while and then…the moment came. Adieu, family. Off I go now to the dust. Honestly, she’s relieved about this one. Unlike the plate and fireplace, when it comes to the plant, she’s just relieved. The plant had started to be an embarrassing talking point. “What happened to your plant?” guests would say, staring sadly, suddenly thinking about all the broken things in their own lives—the relationships they couldn’t repair.
Other interesting things worth watching:
A short film called Five Weeks.
Skinny jeans are back.
The Heaven and Earth Grocery Store by James’ McBride. A very fun read which follows the Black and Jewish residents of a Pennsylvania town in the early 20th century—all somehow connected to the Heaven and Earth Grocery Store. The author is so playful you can feel him enjoying these stories and language.
Breath: The New Science of a Lost Art by James Nestor. I can’t stop talking about the value of nose breathing now. Apparently mouth breathing is killing us all. Or maybe not killing us, but causing all kinds of ills. I even thought I had cured my husband’s snoring. But he, my friends, is an enigma. He snores with his mouth CLOSED. He’s a wizard. Now what?
This vintage find. $24. Made in Bulgaria.
Which frankly, feels like it’s giving off the vibe of this Horses skirt for $425. Minus the hot pink. Yay or nay?
It’s a yay for me!
Letting go of broken things always a challenge...memories, convience, absurdly not permanent even if we think so.
